Police take action to curb hijackings, 18 arrested

Three baby car seats, believed to have been stolen during hijackings, were also recovered.

A STRONG police presence was felt over the past few weeks in the uMkhanyakude District as deployments started to bear fruit.

Joint operations by Public Order Police, Taxi Task Team, Detectives Branch, Vehicle Identification Services, fingerprint experts and Drug Task Teams have yielded positive results in their bid to curb the amount of hijackings in the area.

Over the weekend, these units together with Border Police, the SANDF and Ezemvelo Wildlife recovered two suspected stolen vehicles and an engine.

Three baby car seats, believed to have been stolen during hijackings, were also recovered.

‘Eighteen undocumented foreigners were arrested,’ said police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane.

‘A 47-year-old man was also arrested at Pongola for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,’ he said.

‘He was found in possession of a .38 Special revolver with three rounds of ammunition and will appear in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court soon.’

The firearm will also be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crime.
