Eight A’s for super Emma

St Catherine's is celebrating a 100% pass rate with 79% distinctions

SHRIEKS of joy and tears of happiness was the order of the day at St Catherine’s School on Wednesday morning as the matric class of 14 celebrated a 100% pass rate, with 79% of the group earning distinctions.

Top achiever Emma Harris had exactly eight reasons to celebrate.

The former headgirl received eight distinctions in English, Afrikaans, accounting, physical science, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics and geography.

‘I had to count twice just to believe it,’ said an elated Emma.

‘I did not allow my expectations to get too high, but I had hoped to receive eight distinctions.’

Following a busy year, Emma’s biggest challenge was to find a balance between her role as headgirl, work and a social life.

‘My motivation was driven by my teachers, parents and sister, but all glory goes to God.’

Emma is looking forward to a change as she gears up to make her way to Spain where she will au pair during her gap year.

During her time there, she plans to study Spanish, which may lead to study in languages next year.

Sisanda Ngema

Another pupil joining in the celebrations was Sisanda Ngema, who received six distinctions.

‘I am in total disbelief!’ said Sisanda, who hails from Mtubatuba.

‘My mother was screaming, I really did not expect these results.’

Sisanda, who has received great support from her parents and teachers, found her biggest challenge during the year to be the distance she had to travel with limited her study time.

But she did not allow this to hold her back from achieving her goals.

‘My class was a great motivation as we all wanted to succeed and do the very best we could,’ said Sisanda.

Now ready to spread her wings, Sisanda will study actuarial science at the University of the Witwatersrand.
