BIRDSWOOD Secondary School top matric achiever Thabani Ntshangase scored six distinctions in the National Senior Certificate examinations and is one step closer to pursuing his studies in medicine.

Achieving top marks in life sciences, physical sciences, geography, tourism, life orientation and isiZulu, the 18–year-old from Madlazini has maintained excellent results throughout the year and also received the school’s Dux award.

Ntshangase has attributed his excellent results to consistent hard work and many hours of studying.

He is awaiting confirmation from either the University of Cape Town or University of KwaZulu Natal where he plans to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.

‘I would encourage future matrics to go through the work before the teacher presents it in the classroom so you know what questions to ask.

‘Teaching other pupils helps as a study method and it is important to attend extra lessons after school and on weekends,’ said Ntshangase.

Following closely behind him was Andile Mthembu from Empangeni, who achieved five distinctions and will be studying environmental sciences at UKZN.

While the school was gunning for a 100% pass rate, elated Principal Stanley Masibuko said he was nevertheless happy with 98.3% pass rate.

‘This is the school’s first matric class and they have achieved quality results with a total of 50 distinctions, 23 bachelors degree and 22 diploma qualifications.

‘Our pupils worked hard and parents played a vital role in ensuring that their children attended the extra after-school and weekend classes, ‘ Masibuko said.
