KZN holiday arrest shocker

More than one thousand suspects arrested in one week in KZN during the festive season

OVER 1061 people were arrested in KZN between 21 and 27 December.

Through a special unit, Operation Fiela, police nabbed suspects involved in various crimes including murder, robbery, dealing in liquor, sexual offences, assaults, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of drugs, stock theft, housebreakings, shoplifting, drunken driving and attempted murder.

According to Major Thulani Zwane, 7398.161 grams of drugs were recovered across the province. This included dagga, cocaine powder, crack cocaine, heroin, whoonga and mandrax.

Zwane also said unlicensed firearms such as pistols, special revolvers, AK47 rifles and shotguns as well as ammunition were recovered which will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they were involved in any other crimes in the country.

The unit also recovered 15 suspected stolen vehicles throughout the province.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded police for their hard work during the Festive Season.

‘Our members will continue to strive in protecting the citizens of this province including the holiday makers. Members of the community are encouraged to continue supporting police in the fight against crime by informing them of the whereabouts of wanted criminals,’ she said.
