City promotes no violence against women and children
The City of uMhlathuze held a 16 Days Activism Against Woman and Children Abuse at Bingoma Primary School in Mevamhlophe area on Monday
WOMEN of all ages should be protected and not be violated in any way.
It is up to society to report abuse incidents and carry out the strong message for 365 days of the year.
Those were sentiments of the City of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Cllr Vera Gumbi, during the 16 Days of Activism Against Woman and Child Abuse event held at Bingoma Primary School sports ground in Mevamhlophe area on Monday.
The purpose was to create an awareness and offer residents information from the Departments of Correctional Services, Health and Police.
Gumbi said woman should know their rights and create a better life for themselves.
‘If we come together, we can win this battle,’ she said.
Leaders expressed their concern on the rapid rise of violence and abuse in the area.
Addressing hundreds of residents, City Mayor Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo, said the constitution which promotes human dignity and equality, includes gender equality and the advancement of human rights and freedom.
‘The vision of equality incorporates gender and other imbalances. This is taken forward in the legislation and it is our duty as leaders to spread this message,’ he said.
UThungulu District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi also supported the programme.
‘Males should take their place and protect females whether at home or in the work place,’ she said.
HIV/Aids awareness was also part of the campaign.
City Municipal Manager Dr Nhlanhla Sibeko, Speaker Cllr Mfundo Mthenjana and other municipal managers were part of the event.
Residents were entertained by local artists including eSikhaleni poet Mbalenhle ‘Magcwabe’ Mkhize.
