Sea Rescue launches brand new gift boat.

SEA Rescue Station 19 in Richards Bay proudly took ownership on Saturday of its brand new 4.7m rigid inflatable boat ‘Grindrod Rescue’.
Fittingly, the handover took place in the notorious Bay Hall area, where the NSRI has conducted many a rescue over the years.
Station Commander Dorian Robertson was handed the ‘kill switch’ keys to the rapid response craft by sponsor representative Roelof Camminga, following a blessing service by Dave Savides and the traditional pouring of champagne over her bow.
Having been involved with the NSRI for the past 10 years, Camminga has been at the forefront of a combined fundraising effort by the local shipping fraternity, centred on the annual Island View Shipping Golf Day.
‘This event has become well entrenched on the golf calendar, with players and support, both locally and from the South African shipping scene at large,’ said Camminga.
‘A total of R820 000 has already been presented to Station 19.
‘This year R210 000 was raised, surpassing all prior records, and was off-set against the purchase of the much needed craft’.
‘The close affinity to the sea, that of the NSRI and the dominant maritime industry footprint of Grindrod Shipping almost naturally facilitates our support through association.
‘As long as there is need at Station 19, and with the unwavering assistance from our business partners, clients and service providers, we shall continue to provide whatever support we can.’
The handover was followed by a powerful demonstration of the craft’s capability, with the crew effecting an impressive rescue of a ‘drown victim’ in a matter of seconds.
The new boat will be used for training as well as rescues in surf, inland waters and rivers.
