THE latest Victims of Crime Survey, released by Statistics SA, indicates that 65 percent of KZN residents polled held a view that police were lazy and took long to respond to call-outs.
Of these, 29.3 percent believed that the long response time was due to the challenge of under-resourcing. On the positive, 35.4 percent of those polled believed that the crime had reduced over the last three years.
KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu whose department plays an oversight role over the performance of the police said police management was addressing these perceptions and embarking on corrective measures.
‘Extensive monitoring of police performance and reaction time is being conducted,’ he said.
‘Our evaluation looks at the poorly performing stations and propose corrective measures, service delivery complaints lodged against stations and whether these stations have attracted any negative publicity,
‘Most of the cases weaknesses found were presented to station management so that they could be immediately addressed.’ Mchunu said.
