Lyon selected for KZN golf squad

ESHOWE resident Tania Lyon was selected for the KwaZulu-Natal ‘A’ women’s golf team and is participating in the 53rd Pick n Pay South African Women’s Inter Provincial Championships.

The tournament is currently being held at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club and finishes today.

The championships provided for four days of competition between 16 A- and B- Division teams playing for glory in the country’s largest national team championship.

KZN ‘A’ team captain Tiffany Avern-Taplin says that the team has a good mix of experience and youth.

Tania is joined by fellow team members Michaela Fletcher, Kate Brett-Castle, Lizzie Currie and Brittney-Fay Berger with Judith Patterson as the team manager.

KZN have only an ‘A’ Division team participating in the championships.

Women’s Golf South Africa president, Cynthia Rayner said, ‘This tournament not only demands stamina and physical strength, but also mental fitness at the highest level and we can expect a week of spirited challenges, high quality golf and tense battles as our players resume their provincial rivalries on Tuesday.’

‘Forty-two of the 80 players in the field are juniors which means 53% of the players in the line were born in 1995 or later,’ Rayner said.

‘This speaks volumes to the talent and standard of the junior golf development in South Africa, because every team in the A and B Divisions is chosen on merit,’ she said.

The golf kicked off on Tuesday with foursomes and singles stroke play qualifying rounds in the morning and afternoon respectively.

The foursomes and singles match play competition got underway on Wednesday.

A Division teams, Gauteng North A and B, Boland, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, KZN, North West and Western Province A are participating for the Jean Tindall Memorial Trophy, while the B Division teams, Border, Eastern Province, Free State and Northern Cape, Gauteng B, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Southern Cape and Western Province B for the Nolan Karp Trophy.
