ANC’s game of thrones sees Premier unseated
Premier Senzo Mchunu has been dethroned by newly elected provincial ANC leader, Sihle Zikalala.
IN a move that was greeted with protests by opposition parties, the newly elected ANC leader in KZN Sihle Zikalala unseated Premier Senzo Mchunu at provincial legislature yesterday.
While away at a sitting of the National Council of Provinces, Mchunu had no idea Zikalala had moved into the chair traditionally occupied by the Premier of the province, shifting Mchunu one chair to the right.
Members of the legislature were forced to wait two hours as Zikalala was sworn in.
Shortly after Speaker Lydia Johnson asked the house to applaud Zikalala in welcome, opposition party members walked out.
Musical chairs
The move is symbolic of Zikalala’s control of the leading party in the province, and he has made it clear that Mchunu is no longer steering the cart.
After a much publicised and talked about provincial election, the fabled ‘two centres of power’ has begun to unfold for the voting public to observe.
It is believed that there will be ‘turmoil’ within the leading party as Mchunu, head of administration, and Zikalala, political leader, battle it out.
