
THE South African Police Service launched Operation Fiela in Zululand during November to prepare for the festive season.
The operation was launched on the P230 district road – from the R66 running through the rural area of uMlalazi to Dlangubo where it intersects the R34 outside Empangeni.
The road has been targeted by hijackers and house robbers.
The eShowe SAPS were joined by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), uMlalazi Protection Services and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officers, who set up random roadblocks.
During the operation, 10 premises, 99 vehicles and 40 people were searched.
RTI issued 31 fines for various vehicle related contraventions.
One person was arrested for an unlicenced firearm, two for possession of dagga and one for dealing in liquor.
A 9mm pistol and three rounds of ammunition, whoonga, knives and liquor were confiscated.
