‘Lion’ stops jogger in his tracks

Thokozani Msholo was sure he spotted a lion near the Mondi forest yesterday.

THE sight of a lion crossing the road in front of him stopped a Kwambonambi runner dead in his tracks early yesterday morning.

Thokozani Msholo (40) left Kwambo at around 5.30am and had jogged about four kilometres in the direction of RBM when the saw the predator emerge from the Mondi forest.

‘I am still shaking! It crossed about 100 metres ahead of me and luckily did not look my way.

‘I froze and was trembling so much my knees were shaking.

‘It was a large male, perhaps full grown.’

When he was sure the animal had left the immediate area, Thokozani bravely went and photographed the spoor it had left.

The photos were sent to the Zululand Observer and forwarded to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials who on investigation determined that – based on the spoor – the animal was probably just a large dog.

However, Thokozani is convinced it WAS a lion.

And even if it wasn’t, his fear was real, for sure!
