Eskom energy efficiency campaign rolls out

Eskom workers will go door to door to distribute energy saving lamps.

ESKOM has resumed its energy efficiency campaign by distributing more than 10 million energy saving lamps across all nine provinces within the next two years.

Energy efficiency not only helps reduce pressure on the national grid, but also benefits customers in terms of lower monthly bills, as well as creating a cleaner environment as less coal is burnt to generate electricity.

To date, more than 64 million energy saving lamps or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have been distributed to homes across South Africa, making it one of the biggest energy saving initiatives of its kind in the world.

Ten million CFLs are to be distributed in all nine provinces between mid-November 2015 and 31 March 2017. This is expected to save 321MW.

Commencing in KZN, the first phase of the programme targets installing five million CFLs in five provinces.

Demand savings during the first phase are estimated at 155MW, enough to power towns the size of Ladysmith and Estcourt.

Installation

Eskom-accredited installers – wearing bibs with the words ‘Free Efficient Lighting Exchange Project’ – will be going door-to-door to swap incandescent light bulbs and spent CFLs for free. Households will receive leaflets informing them of when installers will be in their area, while additional information on the programme will be broadcast on community radio stations in the province.

With installation teams having to access homes to do the installations, households should take every precaution to ensure their personal safety.

Only representatives dressed in clearly marked bibs and carrying Eskom ID cards should be allowed to enter your home.

Additional safety measures built into the programme are briefing sessions with neighbourhood watch organisations as well as police in one’s area.

Contact the Eskom Call Centre on 08600 37566 or visit www.eskom.co.za/idm for full information on the areas to be covered in KZN, safety tips on handling CFLs and how to dispose of them.
