KZN MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu has expressed anger and shock at the news of yet another policeman who was shot dead yesterday.
In a statement, Mchunu called the killing of police offices ‘diabolical’ and ‘tantamount to high treason’.
Constable Senzo Ndwandwe and Warrant Officer Jeriko Mdletshe were conducting a routine stop and search operation at about 9am when they responded to a report of suspicious men parked next to the R102, not far from a shopping centre in Gingindlovu.
As they passed a stationary vehicle, gunmen in the car opened fire on the policemen.
Mdletshe, 51, was killed while Ndwandwe (37) was critically wounded.
The suspects fled the scene, however, their getaway vehicle was found abandoned few kilometres away.
An angry and upset Mchunu expressed shock at the attacks on the police, condemning them in the strongest possible terms.
He called on anyone with information on the case to come forward immediately.
‘It is imperative that we have to lock horns with the police and all crime fighting structures to put an end to this inhumane scourge. Equally, those responsible for these heinous deeds should be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.’
He further called on the community to work together so that police officers could get the support and backing they deserve.
‘We also urge our law enforcement officers to defend themselves against criminals, within the confines of the law.’
He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the Warrant Officer and wished the injured colleague a speedy recovery.
