VLEIS van der Westhuizen was crowned the Empangeni Singles Darts Champion on Sunday, after he demolished the local competition in 501 games.
Van der Westhuizen’s day included a number of impressive highlights which included – averaging a minimum score of 80, hitting 140 score four times, closing 106 and finishing 501 in 14 darts.
The one man wrecking crew did have a few speed bumps along the way to overall victory, but his composure and experience aided him to victory.
The top 16 players from the Empangeni Singles Darts League gathered at the Empangeni Rugby Football Club to see who would claim the bragging rights for 2015.
Players followed a best out of three knock-out format, playing 501 matches.
The quarter finals saw Ricky Bhudu causing the first upset of the day, when he knocked out favourite Herman Steyn 2-1 in their clash.
Van der Westhuizen beat Naas Strydom in the game of the day 2-1 to book his spot in the semi-finals.
Wildcard Selwyn Barnard beat Dylan Smith 2-1 with JP van der Westhuizen beating Lionel Viljoen 2-0.
The semi-finals saw father and son Vleis and JP take on each other in a game that came down to the wire, with Vleis winning 2-1.
Barnard creamed Bhudu 2-0 to book his spot in the final.
The final was best of five and at the end of the fourth game, Barnard and Van der Weshuizen were tied up at 2-a-piece.
In the decider Barnard failed to close, missing double nine by millimetres.
Van der Weshuizen capitalised, closing to claim the title.
The new league will start in the beginning of January and run throughout the year.
Players have till the end of February to register.
An entry fee of R30 plus R5 per challenge is the cost to participate in this competition.
