Craft stall burns during R22 protest

Motorists are urged not to use the D820 road to Muzi Pan between Hluhuwe and Sodwana Bay.

SERVICE delivery protest action that started on the R22 between Hluhluwe and Sodwana Bay last week turned violent today.

A mob of protesters set fire to the Muzi Craft Stall on the D820.

According to people on the scene, while the R22 is currently open, motorists are urged to take extreme caution when travelling in the area, as the D820 road to Muzi Pan is impassable.

Protests are about 18km from Mkhuze Game Reserve’s Ophansi Gate. However, the game reserve’s main access is its eMshopi Gate, accessed via the N2 and Mkhuze Town.

Jozini Local Municipality’s Acting Executive Director of Community Services, John Khumalo, confirmed KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu, who is also uMkhanyakude Champion, and COGTA MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube are meeting with rioting communities tomorrow (Monday).

This, one week after the two MECs met with rioting Ubombo communities. The communities are protesting over water and housing shortages.
