Heyneke Meyer proves unpopular

Claassen and Serfontein launch 'Heyneke Must Fall' campaign

AS a die hard Springbok fan with green blood running through my veins, I must admit that I am bitterly disappointed that the Bok side ended third in the Rugby World Cup in England and failed to bring home the William Webb Ellis trophy.

The squad coached by Heyneke Meyer ‘set history’ by losing to Japan in their opening game of the campaign.

But the way the boys bounced back and performed thereafter seemed to give fans that glimmer of hope again which was lost after the Jap game.

Despite this, the troops played out of their skins and were very unlucky to go down to a ‘great’ New Zealand outfit.

The boys in the green and gold went onto manhandling Argentina in the third/fourth play-off game and had to watch the main game on telly.

But despite this rollercoaster ride and everything that the team had to deal with, former Springbok leaders Wynand Claassen and Divan Serfontein started the ‘Heyneke Must Fall’ campaign.

The pair are on a mission to stop SARU from letting Meyer sign a new four year deal, after what they say is a dismal performance with poor results from the men in green.

They would like to see top players getting a chance to put the green and gold jersey on and see change and growth within the rugby ranks.

I believe that change could be good, but whoever takes the job leading up to the 2019 World Cup in Japan, needs to bring in youngsters to gain experience and must start now to find combinations and bonds needed to produce an unbeatable side.

With all the talent and depth in the country, I personally believe that we can win the 2019 World Cup, if we have the correct coach.

With the Du Plessis brothers gone, Victor Matfield and Jean De Villiers outdated, I am super excited to see the young guns step up and replace these unsung heroes.

Claassen and Serfontein have circulated an email to ex-Springboks and provincial players to back what they believe is the right move into getting our rugby back on track.
