7.30am: Nkodibe protesters block St Lucia off-ramp
MOTORISTS travelling on the N2 near the St Lucia off-ramp are urged to find alternate routes today.
Last night the N2 at the R618 St Lucia/Nongoma off ramp was blocked with barricades and burning tyres.
Passersby said the situation was volatile and the mob were violent.
Mtubatuba SAPS diffused the situation at about 1am but security companies are warning commuters to be vigilant and travel through the area only if necessary as it could flare up again today.
The protests are a continuation of last week’s illegal protest by the Nkodibe community whose homes alongside the N2 are at risk of demolition after community members were allegedly warned of eviction by the landowner.
There is confusion over whether the land is indeed privately owned or if it is Ingonyama Trust land.
A meeting was held yesterday between the community and municipality to plan a legal march today.
However, Mtuba SAPS said the legal march had been postponed as protesters had to seek permission from SANRAL to march on the N2.
