VIDEO: Beach defence makes headway

Engineers are working against time to get Alkantstrand ready for December season.

AFTER last week’s severe winds storms delayed progress, construction of the coastal defence buffer wall at Alkantstrand is moving at top speed.

Working seven days a week, starting as early as 4am daily and continuing as long as incoming high tides will allow, contractors Leomat Construction using two excavators are preparing the foundation to lay a sloping geobag fortification to resist the ocean’s advance.

Site manager Jan Nel explained on Saturday that the first layer of bags laid one metre below the normal beach level would form the base of the protective barrier.

A berm wall was first constructed using rocks and sand, to allow work at all but the highest tides.

More than 1 000 geobags will be laid, each weighing 2.8 tons, with the focus being on the first 150 metres from the lifeguard house northwards, hopefully in time for the holiday season and before the contractors’ break on 16 December.

Once the project is completed, its success will largely depend on continued supply of dredge sediment to nourish the sand-starved beach.
