UPDATE: Police search for primary school killer

Nhlamvana High School Grade 9 attacker is a teen from eMkhobosa Primary School.

THE youth who allegedly stabbed and killed a Grade 9 pupil at Hlamvana High School in eSikhaleni on Tuesday, has been identified.

According to information revealed this week when uMhlathuze Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr Vera Gumbi and Speaker Cllr Mfundo Mthenjane, visited the crime scene to comfort traumatised teachers and pupils, the stabber is believed to be a teen from neighbouring eMkhobosa Primary School.

eSikhawini SAPS spokesperson Lt Thembinkosi Mkhumane, said a manhunt is underway, to locate the alleged assailant.

‘Police are doing everything in their power to bring the suspect to justice,’ he said.

Lungisani Ngema (17) of Mtubatuba had just finished writing his exams when a group of young men approached him at the school’s gate at 2pm, and one teen plunged a knife into his chest.

Witnesses said there was an exchange of words before the incident occurred.

According to school principal Nombuso Mpungose, the victim died inside the school premises.

‘Educators rushed to assist him but it was too late. We don’t know what the altercation was about,’ she said.

School safety

School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson Amanga Ndawo, said Ngema had also pulled out a knife to defend himself when he was attacked.

‘We don’t what would have caused him to have a knife in school. Pupils sometimes feel unsafe when they leave school and carry weapons to protect themselves,’ he said.

He also said parents must ensure that their children are on a right path, and teach them good behaviour at home.

‘We need to work with parents to ensure the safety of our children. Parents have a role to play by teaching them not to carry weapons and to focus on their education.

‘ This is a crucial stage of the year whether pupils must focus on their books than fighting each other,’ said Ndawo.
