Movie Preview: Dis ek Anna

Since its release at the Durban International Film Festival earlier this year, Sara Bletcher’s movie ‘Dis Ek Anna’ has been shrouded in controversy with respect to suitable audience’ ratings.

Starring: Charlene Brouwer, Morne Visser, Nicola Hanekom, Izelle Bezuidenhout, Marius Weyers, Eduan van Jaarsveldt, Drikus Volschenk, Hykie Berg, Kara van der Merwe

Language: Afrikaans with English sub-titles

I have to admit that I was totally blown away by this week’s movie, it’s an absolutely stunning portrayal of a woman (who was repeatedly sexually abused as a child) who has reached the end of her tether and wants to prevent the abuser from harming anyone else.

This is a film which proves that South African film-makers are on a par (if not better than some) with any offerings worldwide.

Sara Blecher has taken an autobiographical tale (sadly enough) written by Anchien Troskie under the pseudonym Elbie Lötter, and brought it to life with a fictionalised scenario in which Anna is imprisoned for murder… and we, as the viewer are drawn in to her tumultuous journey.

Charlene Brouwer, who takes on the role of Anna, makes her début on the big screen alongside the marvellously talented Marius Weyers (Windhond Webber) as the cop who knows that there is more to her story than merely pleading guilty to murder.

The rape statistics in South Africa are absolutely horrific and I truly believe that we haven’t even skimmed the top as there are many who are too afraid to say anything, mistakenly believing that it is their fault or terrified that retribution will be forthcoming in some form – be it to her or a member of her family.

Don’t want to turn this review into a diatribe on rape, but I truly believe that this is a movie which should be seen by as many young girls as possible.

Please don’t get me wrong – murder is definitely NOT the solution … and this is the fictionalised scenario in the movie.

My plea is that you listen to your daughters; watch them; guard them and protect them.

Take notice of any changes in their behaviour; open your arms and welcome them in.
