Fond farewell for the Harrisons
Well-known Zululanders bid farewell after five decades
AFTER a lifetime of memories and achievements in Zululand, Empangeni residents Mike and Carol Harrison are making their way to the midlands.
Ready for a much earned retirement at Amber Valley in Howick, both Mike and Carol have played a monumental role in the community for almost five decades.
Carol, who served at Leisure Gardens for 34 years, was well-known among the residents, who she visited on a weekly basis.
In honour of her long service, the new ‘step-down’ facility has been named the Carol Harrison Wing.
Known as ‘Mrs Leisure Gardens’, she will be sorely missed by the residents and committee.
Sport fanatic
With a passion for sport, Mike Harrison leaves behind a strong legacy as one of Zululand’s finest sportsmen.
Excelling in cricket and rugby, Mike played flyhalf for Empangeni Rugby Club from 1958-1961, but it was cricket that he really loved.
He represented the Empangeni, Zululand, KZN Country Districts and SA Country Districts cricket sides as a top class legbreak bowler.
He played cricket from 1957-1991, before officially retiring from all sports.
When stepping off the field, the opportunity to document local sporting achievements was made possible during his 44 years as sports reporter for the Zululand Observer.
Farewell
Residents at Leisure Gardens honoured the Harrison’s with a farewell function last week.
Mike and Carol were surrounded by friends and family as they celebrated their special time in Zululand.
‘We wish Carol, Mike and Sally a very well earned retirement and a long and happy stay at Amber Valley,’ said close friend June Tennent.
