A KWADUDUZA police Constable was seriously wounded during a shoot-out between police and a large group of armed robbers in the Stanger CBD in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
‘At about 1.30am this morning police responded to an ATM bombing,’ said KZN Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
‘As they approached the scene, a large group of heavily armed robbers opened fire. A police Constable was wounded and the suspects fled in their getaway vehicles.
‘It is not clear at this stage whether anything was taken.’
He added that a group of more than 20 heavily armed men hijacked and disarmed security guards in the vicinity while others bombed the ATMs.
KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics had treated three security guards for minor injuries.
While unconfirmed, it is believed the female Constable was shot in the stomach and rushed to Stanger Hospital.
‘KwaDuduza police are investigating a case of armed robbery, malicious damage to property, attempted murder and hijacking,’ said Zwane.
Forensic services were deployed to comb the scene for evidence and no arrests had yet been made.
