International sights for Khula boxer

A boxer from Khula Village recently had the opportunity to participate in the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa

A GRADE 10 pupil of Silethukhukanya High School put Khula Village on the map when he was selected to compete at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa.

Boxing since 2009, Ntethelelo Ngema travels around South Africa competing in various events, from which he has gained good experience and continues to do so.

After winning a gold medal at a games qualifier in Pretoria last year, followed by a silver medal at another qualifier in Zimbabwe, Ngema and one other South African were chosen to represent their country at the games in September.

‘Every time I compete, I learn more and get better,’ said Ngema.

‘Although I lost my first game in Samoa, which put me out of the games, I watched the other boxers competing, which also taught me a lot.’

Ngema’s games experience brought with it stiff competition from around the world, including countries such as Ireland, England and Australia.

Formerly a soccer player, Ngema knew he wanted to pursue boxing the minute he first donned his gloves.

He trains at the Khula Village Multi-Purpose Centre where he plans to continue training hard so he can earn a place at the next games.
