Womb cancer survivor’s journey of healing
The Richards Bay Secondary School administrator was diagnosed in 2010 with cancer of the womb.
THE POWER of prayer coupled with family and community support kept cancer survivor Romilla Govender pressing on during her journey of healing.
The Richards Bay Secondary School administrator was diagnosed in 2010 with cancer of the womb, at a time when she was planning for a third child.
Having struggled to conceive naturally with her daughters, she was devastated when doctors gave her the news.
‘I had done my regular pap smear and was given the all clear, however when I continued to suffer with severe bleeding, I underwent a scraping of the womb and they detected cancer in the first stages.
‘I had my womb and ovaries removed.
‘My husband, children and extended family were my pillar of strength and I continued to pray and stay positive in making a full recovery.
‘It is important for cancer patients to stay strong, focused and to be around people.
‘I found that you feel more ill when you think about all the negative aspects and you have to keep your spirits up and maintain a positive outlook in life to overcome the battle.
‘My advice to patients is to continue with their activities, speak to people and share their experiences with others.
Govender says the LifeLine Zululand Cancer Support Group has played a significant role in keeping her motivated and offering support to her family.
She said the meetings are a great platform for cancer patients, survivors and their families to encourage each other.
‘Our talks and seminars with various guest speakers is highly informative and my children have learned so much as well.
‘I would encourage cancer patients and survivors to visit us at the monthly meetings at Netcare The Bay Hospital on the first Wednesday of every month,’ she said.
