Locals assist Pakistani flood victims

Unizulu Professor creates water filter used in Pakistan for flood victims.

RECENT month-long floods in Pakistan killed 169 people while nearly 800 000 people were evacuated, leaving masses of citizens bound to camps and exposed to contaminated water.

University of Zululand Professor Jean Simonis has created specialised water filters to process safe drinking water, and in partnership with Global Relief CEO Loffie Schoeman has shipped off more than 20 filters to the affected areas of Pakistan.

Global Relief is a South African-based organisation facilitating professional and other volunteers to assist the survivors of major disasters around the world.

In contact with non-governmental organisations in Iraq and most of the Middle East, the organisation’s psychosocial workers are also trained to help survivors deal with the emotional trauma of a disaster and work in a multitude of camps housing displaced people.
