From Belgium to Zululand

Rotary youth exchange student, Coralie Duliere learns the ropes in Zululand.

WHEN the opportunity arose to jump on a plane and head to sunny South Africa for a year of travel and exploration, Coralie Duliere (18) was on the first flight out.

Travelling from Belgium, Coralie made her way to Zululand in July as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange programme.

Currently at St Catherine’s, she will be experiencing a year of cultural diversity, new traditions and a different lifestyle while moving to new host families every two months.

After her father went to the USA with Rotary, Coralie decided she wanted to take on a similar challenge, as well as learn English in a different country.

Although she has already been bitten by the travel bug and visited China, Haiti and a number of European countries, Coralie decided to live the African dream.

‘The biggest difference has been driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road,’ she said. ‘And our classes here begin much earlier.’

As part of the youth exchange programme, Coralie will not only live the life of an average South African teenage girl, but take part in a number of social development programmes.

Travel

Although Zululand is her home base, she has been fortunate enough to do some travelling.

She recently took part in the school’s geography tour, and will be venturing out on a Cape tour towards the end of the month with fellow exchange students.

‘Both the school and the families always get excited when an exchange student comes to town,’ said Rotarian and St Catherine’s remedial teacher Denise Brook.

Scheduled to leave in July next year, Coralie still has nine months of exciting South African adventures to look forward to.

Those interested in the programme can contact Denise Brook on 083 3246045 for more information.
