Heavy sentence for killing brother

Court sentences man to 20 years behind bars for stabbing sibling

A NGWAVUMA man who stabbed his older brother to death last year, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars at the eSikhawini Regional Court on Tuesday.

Phumlani Mafuleka was charged with the murder of his brother Vusumuzi at the eBaleni Farm staff cottages outside Mtunzini in February last year after his mother handed him over to the police.

On Monday state witness Thabo Myeni described how a brotherly visit at the farm cottages ended in tragedy after the two siblings argued over accommodation.

‘Phumlani arrived at the farm to visit his brother for three days. Vusi asked him to leave because he was not authorised to stay longer. He refused to go back to his house and became very angry. They had a heated argument before Phumlani pulled out a knife. Vusi smacked him with the flat side of a cane knife,’ said Myeni.

‘At first Phumlani retreated, only to come back a few minutes later and then stab his brother in the chest.’

Throughout the trial, Phulmani denied the charges against him, saying he was not even in the same area as his deceased brother on the day in question, adding that it was just a conspiracy to destroy and discredit his good name.
