Sclanders busting out on the rugby field
Empangeni sportsman selected for the KZN Duikers U18 side in his debut rugby season.
EMPANGENI’S Brian Sclanders traded in his bicycle and running shoes for rugby togs and reaped reward by getting selected for the KZN Duikers U18 team.
The 18-year-old who is currently in matric at Glenwood High School has countless accolades in cycling and triathlons, having dominated the Zululand region for years.
But now Sclanders finds himself playing rugby an enjoying the physical aspect of the game.
Sclanders played third team wing for his school and outside centre/wing for the Varsity College U18 club rugby team.
Brian was part of the Varsity College side that beat Durban Collegians in the finals of the Junior Club Rugby Finals.
After impressing at club level, Sclanders received the call-up into the KZN outfit as an outside centre.
The team lost to the Lions Invitational team but bounced back to beat the KZN Invitational team 57-8.
Sclanders dotted down twice in both matches for his side.
He jetted off yesterday (Sunday) to Johannesburg to compete in the Junior IPT Tournament.
The team will play the Lions today (Monday), Valke tomorrow and the Blue Bulls on Thursday.
Depending on the results, the KZN side might play in the 3rd/4th play-offs or the finals on Saturday.
Sclanders returns home on Sunday, then has a week’s preparation before their match against the Blue Bulls at Varsity College on Sunday 11 October.
