Ngwelezana eye clinic sports top laser equipment
Ngwelezana Hospital Eye Clinic boasts one of the best laser eye machines in KwaZulu-Natal.
BOASTING one of the most advanced state of the art laser eye machines in the province, what used to be treatment over a three day period is now just a few hours at Ngwelezana Hospital Eye Clinic.
Used to treat proliferate diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions and macular oedema common to older people, Eye Specialist Consultant Dr Shaneel Singh said the multi-spot laser has revolutionised treatment for patients.
‘The upgrade of the unit and the decongestion of the hospital, owed to basic screening at local clinics, has assisted in the department being able to concentrate mainly on tertiary cases.
‘Common to our unit is cataracts, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma.
‘Eye diseases are painless, you get blinded without knowing and high eye pressure is prevalent in the community.
‘We handle between 12 and 14 theatre cases per day,’ said Dr Singh.
Earlier this year, Dr Singh recalls the most bizarre case to date involving a violence and trauma patient.
‘The patient was stabbed in the eye and the knife travelled through the cheek bone, the upper palate and exited the mouth.
‘We had to repair his eyelid, reconstruct the orbit and in time he will receive an artificial eye.
‘It is so often that people are intoxicated and wind up in violent fights and subsequently a hospital bed.
‘Violence and trauma related injuries are most prevalent in general,’ he said.
