A sporting Heritage Day
GALLERY: Young and old braved the heat on Heritage Day to take part in the Rat Race.
LOCALS came out in their numbers to celebrate Heritage Day at Addison Park by participating in a run, mountain bike riding, a seven-a-side hockey tournament and a fun soft ball cricket match.
Forty runners took to the road for the 5km and 10km runs hosted by the uMhlathuze Athletics Club.
The 10km and 30km Rat Ride, hosted by the Cane Rats Club, followed, which saw 105 riders hitting the dirt roads through the sugarcane fields in Empangeni.
Whilst this event was on, the Empangeni Hockey Club hosted a seven-a-side hockey tournament, which saw eight teams competing in a round robin of 20 minute one-way matches.
The day ended with a ‘dads and lads’ fun soft ball cricket match.
All funds raised on the day went towards improving the Empangeni Sports Club’s facilities.
Leanne Kleiner walked away with a brand new mountain bike sponsored by Rattrays worth R7 000 after winning the raffle.
