WATCH: Busker serenades shoppers in Richards Bay

Have you heard father of 11, Anton Mhlangu play the saxophone?

THE sultry, seductive notes of his saxophone flow through the parking lot, reverberating off the concrete creating a stark contrast – moody against bleak, soulful against impersonal.

Bystanders stop and listen, their feet tapping the beat before they stoop to leave a small token of appreciation for his skill.

Perched on the pavement just inside the underground parking area of the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre, 52-year-old municipal worker Anton Mhlangu busks for his love of music and of course, the practice.

Anton, a self-taught saxophone player, can be found busking around the Boardwalk most weekends.

‘I am still new to this,’ he said.

‘I try to expose myself to as many artists as possible, to learn more.’

He has been playing the saxophone for three years, but can also play the guitar and sing. Music is something he loves, and has found a way his passion can help him put bread on the table for his 11 children.

‘To me it’s a ministry. It is more than what they see when they look at me.’

‘I’m crying for the time that was wasted, I was supposed to find this friend of mine earlier in life,’ he said, indicating his saxophone.

Anton dreams of one day opening a centre where he can teach children how to play the saxophone and other instruments.

‘My mission is to have our town remembered as a town with spice. I want to see youngsters play the saxophone.’

As Anton continues to hone his skills on the sax-iest instrument in the world, we hope you stop for a minute and listen to this man play. It’s downright cool.
