VIDEO: Road closed after sulphur truck overturns
The harbour arterial route between Alton and the Port of Richards Bay is closed.
THE harbour arterial route between Alton and the Port of Richards Bay is presently closed to traffic as emergency workers clean up the remains of a serious sulphur spill.
The incident occurred on the sharp bend just before the Bayside Smelter when a truck driver failed to negotiate the run and the vehicle overturned, spilling its large load of sulphur onto the road and into the adjacent veld.
Due to friction the sulphur ignited but the City Fire Department soon had the blaze under control, while traffic officials rerouted vehicles from the busy route.
The driver of the truck was reportedly not seriously injured but was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
