THE good news for Empangeni Rugby Club is that utility backline player Corné Els has returned home after a sterling stint in his debut season playing for Ipswich Rugby Club in England.
Els, who jetted off to England at the end of last year, returns home today (Tuesday) to a small crowd of close friends and family.
He played 15 matches, kicked 47 penalties and conversions (106 points), and crossed the whitewash five times, ending on a total of 131 points.
Even though his kicking record was 64%, he averaged 8.73 points per game.
Els played a monumental role in his team’s success, currently occupying the top spot in the London 2 North East League with 12 wins in 14 matches.
The local lad scooped a handful of man-of-the-match awards and although the league season has not come to an end yet, Els is still holding the second spot on the top point scoring and kicking lists, as well as 12th place on the try scoring list.
After such a successful season abroad, the Rhinos should snap him up in no time.
