Thug beaten after robbing woman at knifepoint

Armed robber gets a beating during citizen's arrest in Richards Bay.

A KNIFE-WIELDING robber ran into trouble on Sunday night when his attack on a young woman earned him a citizen’s arrest, a beating and a public gathering to witness his departure to the police cells.

Sizwe Dlamini, resident of The Olive complex in the Richards Bay CBD who captured the aftermath of the robbery on camera, said he was alerted by terrified screaming, shortly after 8pm.

‘We live in a complex with many students, so it is hard to distinguish between partying and panic.

‘Only when the screaming intensified and became more terrified, we realised someone was in trouble.

‘We went out on the balcony and saw a girl screaming in the road.’

By the time Sizwe arrived on the scene, residents from a nearby lodge already gave chase and apprehended one of two suspects, who according to the woman robbed her at knifepoint while she was walking alone.

An off-duty policeman, Cst Mthimkulu, arrived shortly after the citizen’s arrest and called for back-up and an ambulance, while a crowd gathered around.

‘This man is definitely no stranger to violence and said he had been arrested twice before,’ said Sizwe.

The suspect will be charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances.
