Once upon a time…
To unlock the power of reading, National Book Week 2015 has launched #BUYABOOK.
ARGUABLY one the most powerful sentences ever, ‘Once upon a time’ has for years been the gateway to every adventure for children across the world for years.
Local readers have come together this week to celebrate the power of this sentence during South Africa’s most successful national reading campaign.
To unlock the power of reading, National Book Week 2015 has launched the #BUYABOOK campaign, calling to action individuals to help put books in the hands of those without them.
They can do this by purchasing books for R20 and donating them into the NBW book bins in selected stores.
These books will then be donated to selected communities.
As only 14% of South Africans read books and half the country do not own a single leisure book in their home, the #BUYABOOK campaign was born to curb this figure.
#GOINGPLACES is another campaign involving a more personal approach.
Now in its sixth year, the campaign has mobilised some of the best storytellers, musicians, and ambassadors to take part in the NBW 2015 Bus Tour.
The bus tour will be visiting Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and KZN, accompanied by the NBW mascot, Funda Bala, trumpeting the magic and life-changing power of books.
Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Rejoice Mabudafhasi, who launched National Book Week and the NBW 2015 Bus Tour emphasized the importance of reading in order to achieve success in life for the individual and essentially for nation building and social cohesion.
