Thanda defends liquidation threat

Cash-strapped Thanda succeed in court application

AN attempt by a creditor to liquidate Thanda Royal Zulu Football Club was successfully opposed in the Durban High Court last week.

The liquidation application was brought against the club by Finishing Touch Trading, who claimed Thanda failed to pay R722 133 for kit supplied to the uMhlathuze Stadium-based club.

However, Thanda disputed the amount and also argued that the consignment had been delivered without any agreement regarding price and quantities.

Thanda attorneys, Truter, James, De Ridder, however opposed the application, filing an opposing affidavit and applying for the matter to be placed on the Opposed Roll for trial.

The case was remanded ‘sine die’ (pending the trial date to be allocated by the High Court) and is expected to commence in March next year.

While Thanda FC Chairman Pierre Delvaux said he was confident a settlement would be reached before the next court date was decided – perhaps early next year – the club’s precarious position was still of great concern.

‘We need guaranteed, long-term financial support and sponsorship.

‘At the moment we have been promised enough short-term help from the local and district municipalities to continue our National First Division campaign, but the aim remains to get to the PSL,’ said Delvaux.

‘To do this we must retain our best players and build a winning squad, all of which requires corporate sponsorship.

‘We have recently been assured of getting PSL-standard floodlights, which is wonderful – but pointless if we cannot sustain the club.

‘We want to succeed for a number of reasons, one of which is to develop, promote and showcase local talent, at the same time attracting attention on the city and playing our part in sport tourism.’
