Women drive business change

Empowering women to use their nurturing skills to bring about development in local communities through innovative business ventures

THE vital role of women in building communities and society came under the spotlight during the uThungulu Women’s Summit in Richards Bay last week.

The event held at Protea Hotel Imvubu Lodge attracted women from across the region.

uThungulu District Mayor Cllr Thembeka Mchunu encouraged guests not to lose focus and underestimate their roles in bringing about change and development in the nation.

Under the event’s theme, ‘Working together towards sustainable women empowerment and gender equality’, Mchunu urged women to identify opportunities to educate, empower and grow women in entrepreneurship and business.

‘Today we have women making their mark in mining, construction and the farming industry which were previously male dominated.

‘We cannot wait for an opportunity to arise before we react, we must go out and empower and prepare ourselves to grab business opportunities.

‘An example would be a driver’s license, if you are going to become a business woman it is vital that you have this skill, women should not be limited by the lack of this requirement.

‘As women we need to assess ourselves and find avenues to help each other and network to ensure there is a support structure for those coming into business.’

She also highlighted the district’s initiatives aimed at job creation and promoting entrepreneurship such as the fresh produce market, renewable bio gas project and the wonder bag energy saving cooking alternative.
