Light at the end of stadium tunnel
Vandalism delays Richards Bay sport facility progress.

THE uMhlathuze Stadium, home of Thanda Royal Zulu FC, should soon be equipped with PSL-approved floodlighting.
Mayor Mdu Mhlongo informed Exco members last week that a business plan will be prepared as a number of sources have been identified that could collectively foot the bill for the floodlights.
‘Funds will come from ours own budget, the uThungulu District Municipality – who will match our amount – the provincial government and municipal infrastructure
grants from central government.
‘The lighting is imperative if we are to host top class football here and benefit from the tourism it attracts,’ said Cllr Mhlongo.
‘It was embarrassing at the recent Premier’s Cup competition that matches had to be shortened due to fading light in the late afternoon.’
Vandalism
The floodlight promise was reiterated this week at the official launch of the Mayoral Sports Day, when Mhlongo said many other sport facilities also needed upgrading.
However, he warned that sports federations were shooting themselves in the foot as a result of the extreme vandalism at municipal facilities.
‘We are stuck in a refurbishing pattern and can’t progress, because as soon as we provide infrastructure it is ruined by the public.
‘Taps, fences, windows and doors are replaced over and over.
‘Sports bodies and communities must take ownership of the facilities we provide, and protect them.’
