Power to the pupils

RBCS proteges present alternative energy sources.

IN the 80s, the coolest school projects imaginable included a painted plaster of paris volcano with red and orange pipe cleaner flames, a model clay kidney, which turned out to more closely resemble a speckled red bean, and a woodwork clock complete with battery driven arms.

Some 80s kids will also recall a crab terrarium in the art class basin of a local primary school, which caused a scramble when the large river critters crawled out overnight, some never to be seen again.

Attempts to create interactive scientific projects historically often lead to minor explosions in the science lab, huge clean-ups and a furious teacher.

Since then, children have become ingeniously creative and projects are now masterpieces of modern ingenuity.

But the Richards Bay Christian School (RBCS) raised the project bar even higher this year, with Grade 5s tasked to build a power station.

Judging by the outcome, brilliant and innovative solutions to the country’s electricity problems are in the pipeline.
