MORE than 100 female police officers took their call against women and child abuse to KwaMbonambi’s streets on Friday.
Accompanied by the provincial police band, the SAPS marched from 10am to 2.30pm chanting ‘Stop abusing our women and children’, ‘Stop raping our elderly’ and ‘Stop killing our police’ to a growing crowd of supportive community members.
‘It is time we all say enough is enough,’ said KwaMbonambi Colonel Brenda Mgenge.
‘We have to send a strong message to the men who continue to abuse and kill the defenceless.
‘And to the men who kill police members, why murder the very people you shout to for help at the end of the day?’
After a 20 minute public address at the town’s Spar, many shoppers and local residents also joined in on the demonstration.
The protest was in celebration of Women’s Month and fell under Operation Basadi, or Operation Women, spearheaded by the Kwambo police force.
Afterwards, Mgenge said she and her fellow officers are humbled by the overwhelming support received from the public.
‘A big thank you to all who were involved – the community at large, our police women and all those who kindly offered us refreshments during the day.
‘Our women are so strong and we solute all who have survived heinous acts of violence.
‘We are proud of them.’
