DICE to fire victims’ rescue

Mzingazi family's belongings perish in homestead fire.

TWO MZINGAZI brothers who lost all their belongings when a fire gutted their one bedroom homestead on Friday morning, received a quick lifeline from the Zululand Observer’s charity arm, Do I Care Enough? (DICE).

They were donated blankets, clothing, food and stationary.

It is believed the fire started after one of the brothers, a 10-year-old, left a candle burning in the house when went to school.

According to Mzingazi Community Policing Forum Chairperson Sharon Mdletshe, the boys live in the homestead and their mother is resident in a nearby home on the same property.

‘The mother is an unemployed single parent and they live with relatives.

‘When the younger boy was preparing for school in the morning, the eldest went to the mother’s homestead, where he fell asleep,’ said Mdletshe.

‘The little boy left the candle burning because he assumed his brother would return and put out the candle when he left for school.

‘Neighbours saw the house on fire at around 6am and despite their efforts to put out the fire, the building was consumed by flames and all their belongings destroyed.

‘I am so grateful for DICE’s assistance in helping these young children with essential supplies,’ said Mdletshe
