Brackenham torture couple back in court

A couple accused of kidnapping and torturing a domestic worker to go on trial.

A BRACKENHAM couple who allegedly tortured and abused their domestic worker and held her against her will in 2011, will go on trial in the Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court next week.

Dayanundan Naidoo and his wife, Michelle, face charges of attempted murder and kidnapping after their employee claimed she was subjected to brutal treatment during her three week employment.

The victim, Zibuyisile Mthiyane, managed to flee from the house with extensive burns and bruises after being held captive for three weeks.

Her nightmare ordeal began on 12 May when she was hired by the Brackenham family and ended on 9 June as she made a dash for freedom and fled using a ladder to scale the fence.

She was contacted by the couple after placing an advert in the local newspaper for employment.

Her interview was conducted in the back of the accused’s vehicle outside a shopping centre in Richards Bay and despite being suspicious, she accepted the job as she was a single parent and desperate for work,

When she reported for duty, she was locked inside the house, the windows and doors remained shut and she could not make contact with her family as her cell phone was confiscated.
