Athletes turn up the heat at Mayoral Games

Over 2000 athletes battled it out to claim their spot in representing the region at the upcoming uThungulu District Games

A TOTAL of 2000 athletes excelled in various codes of sport during the annual Mayoral Sports Day at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay on Saturday.

This day was organised to identify talent amongst the youth and fight against social ills like drugs and alcohol.

There were selectors on hand scouting the talent in all 14 sporting codes, to select teams that will represent the region at the uThungulu District Games on Saturday, 21 September at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.

‘These development games started in March within the different wards. Today, teams were grouped into six clusters namely Richards Bay, eNseleni, Ngwelezane, Vulindlela, eSikhaleni and Port Dunford. It was great to see so much sporting talent and skills displayed in the various sporting codes,’ said Chief Officer of Sport and Recreation Development at the City of uMhlathuze, Rodger Ngcobo.

Athletes competed in soccer, volleyball, netball, basketball, athletics, rugby, cricket, table tennis, indigenous games, swimming, dancing, karate, boxing and golf.
