Ethekwini dominate Indigenous Games
Teams competed in Ingqathu (rope skipping), Umlabalaba (board game), Dibeke, Drie Stokkies, Amagende (stones), Incuva and Induku (stick fighting).
ETHEKWINI Metro managed to beat 11 district teams in various sporting codes to claim the Provincial Indigenous Games title held at the 121 Battalion Military Base in Mtubatuba over the weekend.
Teams competed in Ingqathu (rope skipping), Umlabalaba (board game), Dibeke, Drie Stokkies, Amagende (stones), Incuva and Induku (stick fighting).
Ethekwini snatched the overall win with 35 points, with Amajuba claiming second spot on 15 points and uThungulu third on 14 points.
The games were organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation and served as selection for the provincial team that will compete in the national games in Polokwane next month.
KZN will head into the competition as defending champions.
The Indigenous Games are old-style or childhood amusements taken from the country’s diverse racial and ethnic groups as opposed to familiar sport.
Those selected for the KZN team will be advised through their districts during the week.
