Taking the sciences to rural schools

Pupils from Mtubatuba and surrounds learnt more about the sciences at this year's science and technology fair hosted by Mangosuthu University of Technology

AS part of its programme to take the sciences to outlying areas, Mangosuthu University of Technology recently held its annual science and technology fair at Futululu Park Environmental Centre near St Lucia.

Lecturers from a variety of university departments, including Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Green Technologies, spent the week giving high school pupils from around Mtubatuba a taste of what they can expect should they take the sciences further.

Khonzani Nzuza, Mangosutho University of Technology’s Community Liaison Officer, first implemented the science and technology fair in 2008 and has won the minds of many rural high school pupils since.

‘The university declared 2015 the Year of Light so this year we are paying special attention to light technology,’ said Nzuza who is passionate about making pupils from outlying areas aware of their opportunities for tertiary education.

‘This year we are trying to reach out to schools in the uMkhanyakude District and we are calling on all pupils to consider taking the sciences seriously and encouraging others to do so as well.’

Lindelwa Gumede, a Grade 11 pupil at Inkosi Justice Nxumalo Technical High School near Mtubatuba was particularly interested in Chemical Engineering.

‘I enjoy seeing how chemicals are mixed and what reactions take place,’ said Gumede, who is hoping to study medicine in Cuba.

Once qualified, she plans to bring her much-needed skills back home to Mtubatuba.
