VIDEO: Police smoke out suspected fag smugglers

Eagle eye police officers bust alleged cigarette smugglers.

SHARP instinct on the part of a seasoned Flying Squad cop led to the recovery this morning of illicit cigarettes worth about R225 000.

W/O Zakhele Mthethwa and his partner Cnst Nomphilo Qwabe were patrolling the N2 just north of Empangeni when he noticed a suspicious looking double cab bakkie headed towards Durban.

‘I sat on his tail to see how he would react and he kept slowing down – a sure sign something was amiss.

‘When the vehicle turned suddenly towards Empangeni at the Canefields intersection, I pulled him over and asked to inspect the covered load bin,’ said W/O Mthembu.

What he uncovered was 36 boxes each containing 25 cartons of imported Aspen cigarettes, each carton holding 10 packets of cigarettes.

The two male and one female occupants were arrested on the scene…but not after allegedly offering the police officers a bribe.

They were taken to the Empangeni Police Station where they were charged and the vehicle was impounded.
