Local crew reach American dream

Uniting Africans through dance and music is Unizulu creative art group, Spoken Word ProjectProject.

DRAMA and dance group Spoken Word Project will fly the South African flag in the United States next month.

The University of Zululand (Unizulu) Department of Creative Arts students will jet off to North Carolina to participate in the Mama Afrika Festival.

They were invited for their unique style, which includes drama, Zulu dance and music.

The gifted crew will travel alongside Durban performing group, Music Afrika.

‘We are overjoyed to be part of the Mama Afrika Festival and to make South Africa, our university and region proud,’ said group member Mbuyiselo Mlaba.

The creative gang is well known for their various projects, including Vuka Africa and The Embrace.

Through their dance and music, they convey a message of unity among all Africans. Their presentation includes embracing people’s differences and cultures.

They kick-started their performing career when they organised the Rehab Physical Threatre in 2012.

The project aimed at creating awareness against substance and alcohol abuse.

In 2013 the group performed their second project ‘The Embrace’ during the Drama for Life Festival at Wits University.

Later in 2013 they also wowed the audience during the KZN Poetry Show.

Plea for help

The group still needs financial assistance to cover their travelling expenses.

According to Marketing and Publicity Officer, Mbuyiselo Xaba, their flight costs are not included in the package.

‘We need sponsorship to cover our plane tickets because the festival will not pay for them. Everything else is covered. We hope the community will come forward to help us get there,’ he said.
