Pumped up to retain world title

Local powerlifter Zane Ison will look to make history when he attempts to defend his World records at the GPC World Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships in Las Vegas.

RICHARDS Bay powerlifter Zane Ison has been hard at work preparing to defend his world title at the GPC World Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships in Las Vegas from 3 to 29 September.

The 47-year-old strongman currently holds four world records and 10 SA records in the super-heavyweight category (44-49 age group).

If Ison defends his title successfully, he will make history by becoming the first South African to have successfully defended a world title three consecutive times.

The strongman started powerlifting in 2013 after finishing sixth at the SA Strongman finals in 2012.

Zane is known as Big Z in the powerlifting world.

His current world records are – 345kg for squat, 198kg for bench, 300kg deadlift and 842kg total lift.

His goals for the championships are – 370kg for squat, 205kg for bench press, 315kg for deadlift and 890kg for total lift.

‘My training is going really well and I am on track to achieving my goals. I would not be where I am if it was not for my wife Juanese, my trainer Donovan Norris and Craig Webster,’ said Ison.

Big Z impressed at the Rhino Powerlifting SA finals in Pretoria earlier this year, which has given him a confidence boost for the upcoming challenge.

Zane trains once a day for 2 to 3 hours, five times a week, during which he burns over 7 000 kilocalories per session.

Ison’s diet knocks a crater in the grocery cupboard, eating seven times a day.

He competes at his own cost. Anyone willing to contribute towards his world championship campaign can contact Kleintjie Muller on 079 9181749.
