Sketching the story of her life
Young and upcoming artist Klara Dreyer shows her work.
SHE is young, vivacious and beautiful with a passionate love for art in all its forms and a keen eye for detailed observation.
But she is also serious and sad when speaking about her desire to tell a story with her pencil when words fail.
Klara Dreyer, Grade 11 pupil and art student at Richards Bay High School, is a gifted, creative soul with a love for detailed pencil drawings, depicting the raw emotions of difficult subjects facing teenagers today – abuse, abortion, trauma, loneliness and loss.
Yet, many of her sketches are also funny, playful and dreamy.
Her faith also runs through her work like a golden thread.
‘My personal motto is to keep things simple when speaking, but I express my inner thoughts and feelings and the way I view the world through my sketches. I tell my story with pictures.’
Klara discovered her love for art as a young child and her sensitive nature allows her to observe and identify with her subject’s deepest feelings.
Known to be an affectionate and supportive daughter in a close-knit family and loyal friend through thick and thin, she is keenly aware of emotions around her and says she survives the typical storms of teenage life by pouring it all out on paper.
She is also able to accurately capture people in portrait sketches, working from very small photos.
Apart from drawing in pencil and experimenting with different art mediums, she also has a strong solo voice, the rhythm of dance and a love for music.
