Police probe suicide death at eShowe prison
The suspect allegedly raped a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl in Mtunzini last year
A 19-YEAR-OLD awaiting rape trial prisoner at eShowe Correctional Services tragically committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell earlier this month.
Police this week confirmed that wardens found Thubelihle Mncwango hanging by his neck from his single cell door on 3 July.
It is believed the detainees had been allowed outside at 11am for exercise, and returned to their cells at 2pm.
A warden discovered him a short while later.
Mncwango, who was denied bail in May, was admitted to the facility in April after being arrested on charges of rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
It is alleged he raped and robbed a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl in Amalzalyala Reserve near Mtunzini in May 2014, and was due to appear in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court next Friday.
KZN spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Thulani Mdluli said the circumstances surrounding the death were currently under internal investigation.
